Local Middle School Students Make Inspiring Video To Support Classmate

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, Pa. -

A local middle school went the distance to bring awareness to families who are dealing with cancer.

Inspired by a classmate with cancer, they put together a powerful video. The students hope the video will make a difference in their community and beyond.

Fox 29's Dawn Timmeney has the story.

Students at Springfield Middle school were dancing and lip-syncing in the hallways in an amazing show of support for 8th grader, Colin Delaney, who is battling leukemia.

"After Colin was diagnosed in February, we wanted to do something to help him and other families since now it was close to home and we understood it firsthand,” said student Makenna Lukens.

Principal Lauren Davis came up with the idea of putting together a video and partnering with the nonprofit "Bring Hope Home," which helps families with cancer.

"That was really our focus, how do we do something that generates energy and positivity, but also has a major impact on people really having a difficult time,” said Davis.

Colin says it’s been rough and he's missed a lot of school while in the hospital.

"I didn't like school before, and now I actually enjoy coming to school because it’s a normalcy something I get to do cause when I’m in the hospital, nothing is normal,” he said.

The 8th grader admits he is overwhelmed by the love and support, and says it's helped make a difficult time a little easier.

"They’re doing a lot for me, and I’m only one person who has it," said Colin.

"He saw the video and he just had a smile on his face, it just felt amazing to see that we were helping him,” said Colin’s best friend Griffin Feist.

The students are hoping the video goes viral, so they can spread their message of hope.

"It made us all feel really good because we can affect other families not just in the community but everywhere,” said student Caroline Elevanoff.

The video was shown to students at the final school assembly where Colin was recognized for his courage and fighting the fight.

"I just started crying when I first saw it, cause it’s so powerful, and it really touched me," said Lukens.

In addition to the video, the students held several fundraisers, which raised $6,000 dollars for Colin and four other families impacted by cancer to help with their expenses.
