Summer Food Program

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

When the school year ends, many parents struggle to feed their children healthy meals on a daily basis.

But there is a summer food service program that can help.

Single mother Taiwaana Heights takes advantage of it. She takes her son to the East Atlanta Kids Club. "I can say it's a big, big help for me," said Heights.

She says she can rest easier, knowing her son will get breakfast and lunch every day this summer, at no cost to her. "My son eats a lot of things, so he doesn't complain!"

The program is available to children throughout the state.

The meals are served in low-income areas during the summer months.

The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered in Georgia by the Department of Early Care and Learning. "Typically there are about 3 million children nationwide participating in the program, and recieving a meal or snack daily. Here in the metro Atlanta area, in Fulton County, we had over 200 feeding sites that served more than 700,000 meals last summer," said Falita Flowers of the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning.

And all the meals served, must meet specific nutritional guidelines set forth by the USDA, to be sure these kids are happy and healthy all summer long.

Parents and children can find sites in their area where meals will be served by visiting DECAL’s website. Additionally, sites can be located by calling 1-855-550-SFSP (7377) or by texting “FOODGA” to 877-877 (standard messaging and data rates apply).

For more information about the SFSP and to locate an area site, visit the Bright from the Start website. Use the search function (zip code or county) to find a list of all local facilities open to the public and sponsors, addresses, maps, contact names, and phone numbers.
