When Sunday, June 29 rolls around, Karen Walker will no longer be a bookstore owner. She has owned Black Bear Books in Boone since 2009, which is going out of business.

“One day I was in and I was looking around and I just had a thought go through my head that I would like to own this bookstore,” said Walker. “And I’ve never, even though I’m a writer, I’ve never thought of owning a bookstore.”

Walker says the closing is due to a rough economy, a seasonal customer base and embezzlement by an employee. The final straw was when she found out the store’s state sales tax had not been paid. She says the store still owes $35,000.

“At first we thought we would just keep going and pay that off,” she said. “And then we got to the point where we realized we weren’t going to make it to summer, if we made it to summer we’d be okay because we'd have shoppers. But we couldn’t, we, in effect were paying double taxes every month and we couldn’t keep doing it.”

Now, Karen prepares to close down this local, independent bookstore.

“We didn’t buy the book store thinking that we wanted to make money off of it,” she said. “We just wanted to have a book store and keep it in business for the community.”
