Raising Hollan: Deaf Couple Help Hearing Child Reach Developmental Goals

Hickory, NC -

Hollan Quick, the 21-month-old son of Michael Quick and Crystal Turpin, is your typical toddler.

“He’s so beautiful,” said Michael Quick. “He’s such a handsome young man. We actually gave him a name sign that reflects that, because he is so handsome. So, we gave him an “H” in front of the face that circles the face. He adds such beauty to our lives.”

Michael and his wife were born deaf, but little Hollan can hear.

“So we have tried to communicate with Hollan,” said his mother, Crystal Turpin. “Giving him words, and it is tough. But, we’re really trying our best to teach him how to speak and sign at the same time. And that really requires a lot of him at his age to really look at us and be able to focus in on us instead of being distracted and looking around at other things.”

The family’s situation caught the eye of workers at Catawba County Public Health’s Care Coordination for Children. They helped connect the family with programs to help Hollan continue to hit his developmental marks.

“When I met this family, they needed assistance getting a dental appointment, transportation was a big issue for them,” said Darlene Burgess, care coordinator, Catawba County Public Health. “Dad said, “I didn’t think he needed to talk until he was two. So, we talked to them about the importance of getting speech therapy lined up at a much earlier age.”

The arrangements were made and Hollan started speech therapy nearly a year ago.

“We were so appreciative,” said Turpin. “It has been an excellent experience for Hollan. It’s increased his attention span and it just, he is happy, we are happy.”
