Drive-thru thief swipes cash register through window

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The drive-thru is all about making it convenient for the customers - it's not about making it convenient for the crooks. But one thief did not get the memo, even targeting a fast food restaurant right across the street from a Detroit Police mini-station.

The perpetrator approached the drive-thru window of the McDonald's restaurant at the corner of Dequindre and Conant streets on Detroit's east side.

"The manager and the cashier, everybody was just frightened," says Detroit Police Officer Patrice Dubose.

And for good reason. The man was on a mission, for money by any means necessary.

"He was armed with an automatic handgun," Dubose says. "He was aggressive. He demanded the money; she froze. He demanded the money again and she took off."

When the cashier took off running, the perpetrator rammed his body through the drive-thru window, lunged for the loot, latched on like a leech and split.

Police describe the suspect as a black male in his 40s, being 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds. He is said to be bald and have a short beard and mustache with gray in it.

If anyone can identify the suspect you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or the Precinct's Investigative Unit at 313-596-1140.
