Lena Jackson walks more than a mile to get to the nearest bus stop from her apartment in East Charlotte. She says people who live near Thermal Road started taking a short cut through a wooded area with broken down fences just to cut their walking time down by a few minutes.

The closest CATS bus stop is 27 Monroe Road, nearly a twenty minute walk.

Jackson started petition asking city officials and CATS representatives to consider adding an extra stop on Thermal Road to meet the needs of the community. She describes her daily trek.

“Up the hill, through the woods, and pass the railroad tracks as if you were Harriet Tubman walking to freedom. That’s how I feel sometimes,” Jackson said.

The petition has more than 200 signatures. A representative from CATS says there is a policy that determines the distance between bus stops. Although the Thermal Road area may meet that requirement, it’s not in their budget to add a new route.

There are more than 4,000 bus stops in the city, according to a CATS. Whether they’ll put a stop between Thermal and Monroe Road comes down to money. Jackson says she’ll continue her efforts of getting that bus route in her community.
