All week, staff at Camp SOAR have been celebrating the "wins" for their developmentally disabled campers.

The camp has grown to 400 volunteers and 350 campers.

"Sp many of them have never had a chance to experience summer camp activities," said founder Bob Bowler.

"I get so many high fives and pats on the back and love it makes my year."

The campers played with therapy dogs, got charactertures of themselves and went swimming.

But camp is also about growth.

"This is a great opportunity to bring together kids with kids who do not have the exposure to a special population," said Patty Waldron of Swim MAC.

"I think it gets them to know a deeper part of themselves. It's a real growth moment."

And for a teachable moment, the students painted butterflies to remember children of the Holocaust.

"We share a common background which is discrimination. The 1.5 million Jewish children who died in the Holocaust because they were persecuted and discriminated against. And a lot of times the children at camp soar are discriminated against because they're different," said Dana Kapustin of the JCC.
