I got so sick of the Canadian cold, I moved down to Charlotte just to avoid the snow. And of course to join the My Fox Carolinas family as a Digital Journalist. I grew up in Calgary (think the Houston of Canada) and after graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, I moved to Toronto to cover sports; which in Canada means hockey.

Charlotte, NC - After listening to nearly four hours of public comment Wednesday night, Mecklenburg County Commissioners took only a fraction of that for their own discussion on the budget.

They held a Straw Vote Meeting Thursday afternoon to discuss any changes that needed to be made to the budget as it stands. There was only one motion made during the meeting: a motion to accept the budget as is. That motion passed unanimously.

Commissioner Pat Cotham said afterwards that the lack of discussion was unacceptable and that the people who came out to speak Thursday night deserve more.

As the budget stands right now, Mecklenburg County will match whatever increase the state designates for teacher salaries. Part of the budget discussed today was a restricted contingency to be used for this salary increase. If the budget is approved after the June 17 vote, $7,295,511 million would be held in this restricted contingency until state funding has been determined.

That money is enough to match a two percent salary increase, if that is in fact what the state decides on. If the state increases teacher salaries by more than two percent, Mecklenburg County will use money from a one-time fund, take money from another part of the budget, or possibly even raise sales taxes to match the increase.

Chairman Trevor Fuller emphasized that the county is committed to matching the state increase of teacher salaries, no matter what the percentage is.
