Students are usually excited for the school year to finally end, but for some families who rely on the school meals to get by, summer can be a very stressful time.

In Cleveland County, there’s a program filling that void of the school year, one meal at a time.

Between June 9 to August 15, the Free Summer Meals for Children program will be at designated locations all over Cleveland County, providing families meals for their children.

Jada Brown, director of Child Nutrition at Cleveland County Schools, says the purpose of the program is to go above and beyond in the community.

“To know that parents have resources and people do go above and beyond to operate these programs to make sure their kids don’t go hungry at night,” she said.

Cleveland County Schools have about 64 percent of the student body on free or reduced lunch, according to Brown. Anyone is eligible to grab a meal. The only requirement is to eat the meal at the location.
