I got so sick of the Canadian cold, I moved down to Charlotte just to avoid the snow. And of course to join the My Fox Carolinas family as a Digital Journalist. I grew up in Calgary (think the Houston of Canada) and after graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, I moved to Toronto to cover sports; which in Canada means hockey.

Hundreds of teachers and their supporters gathered outside the Government Center this afternoon for a spirited rally.

There was dancing, snow cones, snacks and signs. Even the dark thunderstorm clouds rolling in couldn't damped the mood. What was everyone so excited about? The Board of County Commissioners Public Hearing.

The mood at the rally was light and happy, but what they're rallying for is far less fluffy: money. The county budget will be voted on on June 17th, and tonight provided a chance for members of the public to advocate for what they want before any finals decisions are made regarding the budget.

North Carolina is 46th in the nation in teacher pay, and was one of the only states in the country not to give teachers a raise last year. Teachers here in Charlotte have had enough. Tonight they showed up in masses to make sure the 3 per cent raise they're asking for is at the forefront of tonight's meeting.

With over fifty speakers signed up to share their opinions with Commissioners, the hearing went on for almost four hours. Commissioner Pat Cotham didn't quite get her wish. Before the meeting she said, "I hope they're here until 3am!"

The Board of County Commissioners will make the final decision on the budget on June 17th.
