Grosse Pointe Farms family sues police for $100M, claim of murder cover-up

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich (WJBK) -- The family of a woman who was found dead in the Detroit River in 2010 is suing authorities for damages in connection with the incident.

On behalf of the Romain family, 1-800-Law-Firm is asking for $100 million in damages in the death of Joann Matouk Romain of Grosse Pointe Farms. The family claims that the Grosse Pointe Farms and Grosse Pointe Woods police departments conspired to cover up her murder.

The body of 55-year-old Joann Matouk Romain was found in the Detroit River in March 2010. Matouk had been missing for about two months when her body was found and identified.  Police ruled the death a suicide, after what the family calls a "lacking 48 hour investigation."

Since 2010, the family has maintained that her death was a murder. The family says police overlooked important evidence and say some key witnesses were not interviewed.

"My gut feeling is that she was abducted, she was chloroformed; and that she was thrown in," says Michelle, daughter of Matouk Romain.

The family has hired private investigators, including former FOX 2 investigative reporter Scott Lewis, who said he believes evidence proves that Matouk Romain's death was a murder.

The family even goes as far to say that an unnamed police officer, who has failed to come forward, knows who killed Matouk Romain and that evidence was destroyed.

The two police departments have not yet responded to the lawsuit.
