Police: Mom, Boyfriend Face Charges After Girl Brought Heroin To School

PHILADELPHIA -

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has charged a mother and her boyfriend with endangering the welfare of a child after a search of their residence on Wednesday.

The charges come after a 6-year-old girl brought heroin to school, resulting in her entire class being sent to the hospital.

This happened Tuesday at Barry Elementary School in West Philadelphia.

Police identified the suspects as Marie Hunter, 32, and Christopher Troy-Jenkins White, 28, both of the 4200 block of Viola Street.

Police say in addition to the endangering the welfare of a child charge, the boyfriend faces a small possession of marijuana charge as well.

It was around noon Tuesday when police were called to the school located at 5900 Race Street for a report of narcotics in a classroom.

A teacher told officers that a 6-year-old girl had 10 packets of alleged heroin, which were turned over to police.

The 6-year-old, who apparently tore open one of the packets with her teeth, was complaining of stomach pains. She was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, as were her 19 classmates, who rode on a school bus accompanied by medics and were evaluated for possible drug exposure.

A chemical lab tested the substance and confirmed it was heroin, police said.

Police say the Department of Human Services was notified and took custody of the 6-year-old girl who had brought the packets to school. They also found an eleventh packet in her pants pocket during her interview at CHOP.

After being evaluated at CHOP, the other children were released to their parents. The rest of the school stayed in session until 2:35 p.m.

Police added that a narcotics unit executed a warrant at the girl's Viola Street home, and 18 packets of marijuana were found inside a second-floor front bedroom.
