Mound City Council gets earful over sewage release, damage

Posted: Updated:

Some homeowners in Mound have reached their tipping point. Their homes flooded with untreated sewage, and many have limited insurance dollars coming to fix the damage heavy rains left behind.

Many people living near Lake Minnetonka are still trying to clean up following the sewage release a few weeks ago -- and on Tuesday night, city leaders heard from residents who aren't happy about it.

The comments at the meeting were as much about water quality as water levels, but the real concern was the damage to dozens of homes caused by the backed-up sewers. Many say they don't want to hear finger pointing; they just want to know who will take responsibility for making sure it never happens again.

City leaders say a torrential rain storm forced them to bypass untreated sewer water into Lake Minnetonka. The unprecedented measure was taken to try and prevent raw sewage from backing up into more than 1,000 homes, but the plan couldn't save everyone.

So far, 34 properties have reported sewage backups in the basement -- and 11 homeowners have already filed claims against the city.

At the meeting, city leaders updated residents on the situation because until now, there has been a lot of talk about how the Met Council's system is maxed out. Now, they say that's not the case.

A big part of the problem is what's called "infiltration," which occurs when ground water leaks into the sanitary sewers. There are also a number of sump pumps illegally draining water into the sewer system.

Since high water is still a problem, no-wake restrictions remain in place on the entire lake. As far as water quality is concerned, three of the six beaches now show acceptable levels of E. coli, but the others still need more time to clear. The Department of Health has put a swim advisory in effect, but the beaches are not closed.
