Camp SOAR (Special Olympics Athletic Retreat) is a five-day camp for people with special needs. Every year around this time, hundreds of campers come together at the Jewish Community Center in Charlotte to participate in many different activities and sports.

The campers say the events give them an opportunity to stay active and be in control of their life.

Kimberly Jones has been coming here for many years. She says basketball is her favorite activity. She plays her heart out, with a big smile on her face. But things weren’t always so cheerful. She spent most of her life in the hospital due to her epilepsy.

Camp SOAR allows her to celebrate her physical independence.

What makes this camp possible are the volunteers who make sure the campers are safe and get the most out of their experience.

“They're all angels here. If someone gets hurt, they are right there for you. They will help you every step of the way,” she said.

Jones is thankful for Camp SOAR. She calls it a place to take back that control and independence she was missing in her childhood.
