POLICE: 16-year-old shooter may be armed, at large in Columbia Heights

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA HEIGHTS, Minn. (KMSP) - The Anoka County Sheriff's Office and Columbia Heights Police Department are looking for a 16-year-old who shot his brother at a home located in the 1700 block of 37th Avenue Northeast on Thursday afternoon.

In a press release issued just before 6 p.m., police clarified to say a woman had called 911 at 3:33 p.m. to say her 19-year-old son had just been shot by his 16-year-old brother. The boy then fled the scene before police arrived and remains at large.

Officials have not identified the gunman or the victim since both are juveniles; however, they do say the victim's injuries are not life-threatening. He was taken to HCMC for treatment.

Police say the teen may still have the handgun used in the shooting, and his parents are cooperating with police in an effort to locate him.

Witness statements allege that the younger brother may have been "playing" with the handgun while pointing it at his brother. No information was given on where the gun may have come from.

The shooting remains under investigation, but a perimeter set up in the area in the hopes of taking the 16-year-old into custody was unsuccessful.
