DPS students learn business skills on Lemonade Day

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - These little cuties were the first to greet us at Palmer Park Preparatory Academy in Detroit for a Paris themed Lemonade Day.

From scooping ice to counting the cash and every job in between, the students have learned countless hands-on lessons. Participants tell FOX 2's Robin Schwartz they helped with customer service, marketing and budgeting.

It turns out this time-honored tradition of summer is a great educational opportunity.

The students in kindergarten through 8th grade even choreographed a lemonade dance to attract customers,

"I want them to learn that within a business they have to learn how to save money, spend money and also and share money," says coordinator Angela Wallace.

With that in mind, a portion of the proceeds from Friday's sales will go to a local charity.

In all, more than 30 thousand DPS students took part in Lemonade Day, along with students across metro Detroit and across the country.

The idea started in Houston, Texas in 2007 and has really grown.

It's a lesson in entrepreneurship these students are actually cheering about.

Huntington Bank helped sponsor Lemonade Day in Michigan, making a valuable investment in the state's business leaders of the future.
