Attorney says his client has been mistaken for a serial bank robber

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - As we've been reporting, the FBI is looking for a serial bank robbery suspect wanted for several crimes in local communities. Authorities say the case is still open, so a local attorney is wondering why his client is currently locked up for some of those robberies.

This is the photo of the serial bank robbery suspect the FBI has been circulating in connection with at least eight bank robberies across metro Detroit between March and May, including crimes in Lathrup Village, Berkley, Oak Park, Center Line and Dearborn.

About two weeks ago Glen Jones Jr. was arrested following a tip and a lineup where a bank teller and another witness identified him.

"There are some definite similarities to him. The hairline is different, my client has a different hairline, different ears, a little bit different nose," says Todd Flood. He insists that the wrong guy is currently behind bars and lists several other reasons he believes that.-+

Jones has been on disability and apparently can't run, but surveillance video from a PNC Bank in Center Line shows the suspect running.

Flood also says phone records show Jones was on the phone with his mother when he was supposed to be committing one robbery.

"Innocent people are charged with crimes every day of the week. ... A man's sitting in jail; he's a single father with a special needs child. He has worked for Ford for a long period of time," says Flood.

Adding to the confusion, the FBI released the suspect's photo and a plea for help from the public just a few days ago, even though Jones was first locked up May 23rd .

In their bulletin, they say the suspect may be driving a dark colored SUV. Jones doesn't have one.

"Either the FBI has it wrong, you know, that the guy is in custody and they're looking for someone else, or they have it right - my guy is not the one that has it," says Flood.

FOX 2 contacted the FBI to find out what they have to say about this. A spokesperson refused to comment but did confirm the investigation is still open and they're still seeking help from the public.

Flood says he will be in court next week asking a judge to lower bond for Jones so he can be released.

He admits these photos look an awful lot alike but he says no prints fingerprints or DNA link his client to the crimes.
