Smith Planned To Retire With Panthers After 2014

Posted: Updated:

Just when it seemed the passions about the departure of Steve Smith were about to die down, a new Sports Illustrated interview may get people talking again. The Panthers all-time leading receiver said he planned to retire after the 2014 season before the team released him earlier this year.

"The only people who knew were my close friends and my wife,'' Smith told SI’s Don Banks. "This year was actually going to be my last year in Carolina. I was going to retire. I was done. I had been waking up every day about 3 a.m. and wrestling with some things in my quiet time.”

Smith’s retirement plans were interrupted by the Panthers, who released him after he spent his entire 13 year-career with the franchise. He signed a three-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens later that month.

Smith says his release renewed his passion for the game.

"When I got released, and how it happened, it made me feel a certain way,'' Smith said. "It gave me a little bit maybe that I had been missing. My wife said, 'How do you feel about that?' And my response was to start working out again every day after that. I started jogging, my knee started feeling better, and the next thing you know, I got a three-year deal here."

Smith will matchup against his old team on Sept. 28.
