Union Co. Education Chairman OK with County Funding Figures

Posted: Updated:
Union County, NC - The battle over funding for Union County Public Schools could soon be over.

Union County Board of Commissioners have tentatively agreed on giving $87 million in operating and $19.5 million in capital funds for Union County Public Schools.

The Board of Education had previously requested $89 million in operating and $27 million for capital -- buy may soon vote in favor of compromising and accepting the offer.

"At first glance those are doable numbers for us," Yercheck said. "I will go back and speak with the Board of Education and I believe that they will view them favorably."

One stipulation is commissioners say they are interested in "funding priorities that focus on student safety, the ADA restroom renovations and needs, roofing projects and buses."

Those funds fall under the $19.5 million for capital funds.

UCPS currently has over $10 million in roofing projects right now.

"We've still got ADA issues that we're working on and some of that is as simple as redoing a ramp in front of a school or redoing bathroom stalls to accommodate wheelchairs," Yercheck said. "All of those are still going."

"It's not time to do football stadiums, gymnasiums, bleachers," commissioner Richard Helms said. "We need to really focus on the health and safety issues for our children."

The Board of Education is scheduled to meet this Tuesday at 9 a.m.

A commissioner vote to approve the budget would take place on June 30.

If you chain your dog outside and you live in Kannapolis, there are new regulations being put in place to ensure your pup is safe when you leave the yard. Many people chain their dog outside for only a few minutes, but others leave their dogs outside in the heat for the entire day. The Humane Society in Concord has seen 5-6 dogs die due to strangulation from their chains in recent months.
