What's more All American for the Fourth of July than a good old hot dog? If you're looking for a patriotic meal, you can head to either Dilworth or Ballantyne and check out JJ's Red Hots.

Ever have a drink with frosting on it? At Fu Man Chu Cupcakes in Plaza-Midwood, when you order a White Russian or an Old Fashion that is exactly what you get.

Owner Andy Jackson has been serving up alcohol-laced cupcakes, as well as some other unusual concoctions, for the past few years for events and parties. Now, he has his own brick-and-mortar store that is quickly becoming a Plaza-Midwood hangout.

The eclectic bakery is part art gallery, part coffee shop, and part cupcake store. Jackson's wife is an artist, and she inspired him to make the shop a place where local artists can display and sell their works.

Restaurant expert Sarah Crosland recently visited Fu Man Chu (which gets its name from the type of mustache prominently displayed on Jackson's face) to see what it's all about.

"This started out as a hobby to stop drinking," Jackson said. "Then we started getting requests for parties, weddings. We baked for Homeland when it was filming here, and then we got a big event when the DNC was in Charlotte. I got tired of renting kitchen space and decided I needed to open my own place."

Besides the boozy baked goods, Jackson also makes cupcakes with sea-salted caramel, bacon, and Sriracha.

"I don't do normal," Jackson said. "I don't do chocolate, vanilla or red velvet."

Fu Man Chu Cupcakes is located at 826 Lamar Avenue, just off of Central in Plaza-Midwood.
