The Cabarrus County School System has presented new proposed attendance zones for the Odell schools area, once a new elementary school is built. The new attendance lines will affect students at Odell, Boger, and Cox Mill Elementary Schools.

The school district plans to build a new elementary school on the former Odell Elementary site, which will be for third through fifth graders, and the current Odell Elementary will be for kindergarten through second grade.

Meredith Hatt, a parent of two elementary students, lives in the area that’s proposed for redistricting. Her daughters currently attend Cox Mill Elementary, but under the district’s plan to relieve overcrowding, they will be rezoned for Odell Elementary. Hatt said, “My husband and I were pretty bummed. We really like Cox Mill. It’s one of the best-rated elementary schools.”

Latane Grove’s children also attend Cox Mill Elementary, but the plan calls for them to be redistricted to Odell too. Grove said, “I understand overcrowding and being able to build a new school. And there’s nothing wrong with Odell. I think Odell’s a great school as well. I don’t know if the districting lines make sense.”

The new school is set to open in January 2016. Since that’s in the middle of the school year, the Cabarrus County School System tells us the only school that will be split up then is Odell Elementary. The district says students at the other three campuses won’t have to change schools until the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

Hatt said, “I can see why they need to redistrict, but we don’t want to be the ones picked to have to move our kids.”

There will be a public hearing on the redistricting proposal on Monday, June 9 at 6 p.m. at the district office. The school board must approve the redistricting plan presented by the district. A vote on the proposed attendance zone changes is scheduled at the board's meeting July 14.
