Elected Leaders React To Cannon Guilty Plea

Posted: Updated:

My Fox Carolinas spoke with people who have known Patrick Cannon for years and another person who worked with him for only a few months. There seems to be a general feeling of sadness for the city of Charlotte regarding the corruption scandal involving the former mayor.

In a statement to the press following his guilty plea, Cannon said, “I understand the anger and the frustration that my actions have caused.”

Patrick Cannon admitted to taking bribes while at the top office in the city in the heart of his hometown.

Pat Cotham, a Mecklenburg County Commissioner, has known Cannon for decades. Cotham said, “I texted him yesterday and told him I was thinking about him and his family because this is hard.” Cotham said, “I was glad he (Cannon) had the courage to speak and admit his wrongdoings.”

Kenny Smith became a Charlotte City Council member at about the same time Cannon became mayor. Smith said, “It is an event you really wish the city didn’t have to go through, and I am working to do everything we can on council to restore the citizens faith in us.”
