Bassett Furniture Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Community Service

Newton, NC -

A retail conference turned into community service today at Bassett Furniture’s 50-year-old Upholstery Facility in Newton. Nearly 100 retail stores were represented as area community organizations benefited from “makeovers” courtesy of the company.

“The real focal point of this conference is for us to give back to the community of Newton,” said Mark Jordan, Sr. Vice President, Bassett Upholstery. “Go to all these locations and go in, repaint, refurnish, make a difference in those lives less fortunate than ourselves.”

One of the organizations receiving support was the Family Care Center in Hickory. Bassett painted, spackled and refurnished six apartments on the property. The Center houses homeless families with dependent children.

Family Care Center Executive Director Jane Earnest commented, “We were surprised that we were chosen to be one of the recipients of their community service and volunteer work.”

Bassett Furniture’s success is a bright spot for an industry that has been hit by layoffs and plant closures.

“There’s a lot of extremely hard working, talented people here in the furniture industry that have suffered through a couple decades of things being tough,” said Jordan. “We focus on taking care of our employees. We want to be, not only a good place to work but a fun place to work and a place that you can be proud of that you give back to the community that you’ve lived in and grew up in.”
