Parents without a valid drivers license or social security number are not allowed to volunteer at CMS schools. The school system requires any volunteers present a valid drivers license or social security number. Some parents feel excluded as if they can't be a part of their children's school activities. Charlotte's former mayor, Patrick Cannon, pleaded guilty to Honest Services Wire Fraud in Charlotte's federal courthouse Tuesday morning. He held a short press conference outside the courthouse after he entered his plea in court.

He signed a plea agreement on May 8. That document was unsealed Monday.

He spoke briefly just after the hearing, saying he was deeply sorry for breaking the public's trust.

"Today, I have acknowledged being guilty of accepting monies for constituent services; something that should never have been done while serving in elected office," Cannon said.

He also asked for the public's forgiveness.

If the judge accepts the plea deal, Cannon could face a maximum of 20 years in prison.

A press conference held by the U.S. States Attorney regarding the case is scheduled for 1 p.m.
