Rowan County Commission Not Borrowing Money To Cover Cost of West End Plaza Purchase

Posted: Updated:

Rowan County Commissioner Craig Pierce tells My Fox Carolinas the commission has withdrawn its request to borrow money to replenish the fund balance that was used to pay for the purchase of the West End Plaza. Therefore, the public hearing scheduled for Monday at 7:30 pm was canceled, but some people at the commission's budget public hearing spoke out against the purchase and urged the county to sell the mall.

Shanika Brooker lives near the Salisbury Mall, which earlier this year was renamed the West End Plaza. She says many stores have left recently. Brooker said, “Just a year ago it was great. They had a lot of stores.” She goes on to say, “Now, there’s nothing.”

Last December Rowan County bought the mall with the idea of bringing in some county offices and keeping it from becoming abandoned. But people protested, including a group named La Resistance. People opposed to the mall purchase say the roughly 3.5 million dollar purchase was a waste of money.

John Blair said, “We spoke about the disastrous county commission purchase of a mall that they didn’t need and didn’t know what to do with.”

After months of people speaking out, the commission voted not to borrow money to cover the cost of the mall purchase, but those against the purchase say their elected leaders need to take it a step further. GeoRene Jones, said, “The bottom line is they could sell it get us back in a little better shape financially, and that’s what we’d really like.”

Brooker says no matter who the owner is, she wants the mall restored to its former glory. Brooker said, “It would be great. It would be wonderful. It would be some place to go to spend family time as well and not have to go a long distance.”

Commissioner Jon Barber tells My Fox Carolinas he made a motion for the county to look at alternatives, including possibly selling the mall property, but no one else voted in favor of that. The commission meets again in two weeks.
