Hickory Police Kill Man who Pointed Gun at them

Posted: Updated:

Two Hickory Police officers were involved in a shooting early Monday morning. They killed a man after he pointed a gun at the officers.

According to Hickory Police, a man driving a City of Hickory work truck pulled into the parking lot of the Kangaroo Express on North Center Street. The officers were questioning him when he pointed a gun at an officer.

The officer got away from the truck, and both officers started shooting. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

When both officers walked back to the truck, they found a handgun in the man's hand. They found one spent shell casing in the gun that looks like it malfunctioned after it fired.

Police discovered that the City of Hickory truck was stolen from a city employee's home.

The police recognized the man from a fight call Sunday night at McCroskey's Irish Pub and Grill on Ave Drive.

Police have not released the name of the man or officers involved in the shooting.

Hickory Police asked the State Bureau of Investigation to look into the shooting, which is standard procedure for officer involved shootings.
