Hickory, NC -

Alexander County has long been known as one of the places that breeds race car drivers. Chase Pollard, an 18-year-old wheel-man from Taylorsville, is adding his name to the list of hometown racing heroes, which also includes his father and grandfather.

“I always get people asking me about my dad and my grandpa and tell me all kinds of old stories,” said Chase Pollard. “I’ve always been around it. Once I actually got behind the wheel and just took the first green in that first race, as soon as it kind of starts, you just kind of know if it’s right for you. Dad always says, “If you start racing, you get the bug; and I’m pretty sure I got it.”

Pollard’s dad, Larry, is a former Nationwide Series star who also worked as a crew chief with many of the heavy weights in NASCAR.

Larry Pollard commented, “A few years back [Chase] said, “Can we put something together to go race?” I said, “If you’re into it I will.” He’s kind of fallen to it like fish in water, I guess.”

Pollard’s grandfather is Harry Gant, the man who once piloted the No. 33 Skoal Bandit and picked up the nickname “Mr. September.”

“I’m proud of what he’s gotten done,” said Gant. “It shows he’s a pretty good driver. He’s smooth and they don’t beat and bang around and he can stay up there most of the time.”

It is obvious that the younger Pollard has racing and winning in his genes. In his first season behind the wheel, he won the championship in the 4-Cylinder division at Hickory Motor Speedway.

“We spent a lot of time, but finally got the car to where it was running pretty good,” said Chase Pollard. “Heck, a couple of races in we started running third and we got a couple of poles and…we started winning a couple of times you know.”

His skill is natural, according to the elder Pollard.

“He’s so smooth and yet he’s fast,” said Larry Pollard. “He’s got the qualities of a great racer. He’s composed, he doesn’t get excited. So, I’m really looking forward to what the future is going to bring for him.”

For Gant, Chase’s burgeoning NASCAR career was not something he expected.

“Larry…called me up and told me how good he practiced over here one day,” said Gant. “I said, “Well, we’ll go watch the race.” I was really shocked, you know. Like I say, he won the championship and then rookie, most popular driver and everything he could win.”
