Getting Results: Delaware County Family Receives Donation From Local Contractor

Posted: Updated:
DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. -

Fox 29 showed you the heartbreaking story of a Delaware County family who was left broke after an unlicensed contractor took their money and never finished the job.

Last summer, the Brooks family paid a man $26,000, which was their entire savings to build a new 3-room addition on their Nether Providence Township home.

It turns out, the contractor wasn't licensed, wasn’t permitted to do the job, and what was built had to be torn down.

"We got taken, and basically all I did was cry," said Janet Brooks.

However, hours after our story aired on Fox 29, the right person happened to be watching.

"They gave us the news that they were going to come out here with no money out of our pocket. They were going to fix this. We don't have to do anything," said Janet.

Reynolds Construction of King of Prussia just happened to be building a multi-million dollar expansion at Nether Providence Elementary School, just 3 blocks away from the Brooks home.

"It's good to breathe again," said Paul Brooks.

"So, many people in this township have come forward and offer to help us. I am so overwhelmed with it," said Janet.

Reynolds is spearheading the effort with the help of local contractors, and 2 architecture firms will be donating their time.

The township is also waiving permit fees. The Brooks will now get that addition. The donation is worth up to $40,000

"We certainly hope if makes them feel relieved that they get something for their life saving they invested in the end. And I certainly helps the people the people contributing as much as the people themselves. I’m sure it feels good collectively that the group was able to help," said Michael O’Rourke with GKO Architects.

The mom and dad for the first time in 16 years won't have to sleep on a sofa bed, and their 2 children with autism will have their own rooms.

The contractor is still looking for labor and materials to be donated, but they say if all goes according to plan, the Brooks will be in their home by early fall.

"The dream is back. The hope is back. It’s wonderful. I’m so happy, I am so overwhelmed," said Janet.

An account has also been set up by the community to cover additional costs like furniture and other needs for the kids. Donations can be made in-person at any PNC Bank Branch or sent to:
