Monroe takes charge against vacant, sub-standard housing

Posted: Updated:
The City of Monroe is taking steps to better maintain communities by enforcing minimum housing standards.

In the past, housing standards were dealt with on a complaint-base. Monroe has approved in it's 2015 budget for an additional code enforcement officer. The job for the new employee will to canvas the city for abandoned or below-standard housing to determine the appropriate action.

"Deteriorated and dilapidated dwellings always results in lower property value," Director of Planning Lisa Stinwinter said. "It fosters criminal activity and it really puts the neighborhood in a state of decline.

"So it's the city's goal to beautify that city, reduce those property values, improve the quality of life for those in the city, reduce criminal activity and of course the decline of the neighborhoods."

Vandalism and a place for drug activity are just a couple of the criminal behaviors that the city worries about when dealing with vacant properties.

Monroe did not give out a rough number of homes that could potentially be categorized as "below-standard."

One home on 811 South Johnson St. is soon to be demolished. More will follow.

To some, the violence in Gaza seems a world away, but to one family here in Charlotte it is hitting far too close to home.
