I'm a digital journalist from Charlotte, North Carolina. I was in the United States Air Force for seven and a half years. I was a JAG paralegal in the Air Force, but still wanted to pursue my love of television broadcasting.

More than 100 men took the streets to walk a mile in high heels. There was a special reason behind it all; it was to raise money for Safe Alliance, a non-profit organization in Charlotte. Safe Alliance assists and houses victims of domestic violence.

Carma Vasquez is a busy mom but she still has time to check out the Mooresville Public Library.

"The kids love it. We spend about an hour in here.  I load up on a big bag of books and then movies," said Vasquez.

She juggles life as a mom of two daughters. She will be home-schooling her oldest daughter in the fall.

Going to the library has become a weekly thing.

"It's been a really great way to prep her for that. Get her reading, get her interested in books," said Vasquez.

It's also something that the library hopes to jump start this summer starting June 14th.

Kids can log the hours spent reading in the library system.  For your little scientist,  head to the kids' corner of the library. They will provide the "Mad Summer Scientists" program. It's a summer afternoon filled with experiments.

"We'll be offering it for five weeks straight and it's all different science experiments school kids, K-6th grade" said Nancy Handy who works at the Mooresville Public Library.

Kids can also enjoy story time and "Star Wars" themed Jedi Academy.

"We can't wait!  I've got it all on my calendar," said Vasquez.

All of the events are free.
