What does Hawaii, Trash, and a Charlotte Hotel Have in Common?

Posted: Updated:

Charlotte, N.C. (WJZY) -- Not long ago, she was a hula girl on a cruise line, today she's picking up cigarette butts uptown...and she's actually happy about it.

"Working on cruise ships for almost 8 years, you see how beautiful the world is out there.

It so sad to see plastic bags in the ocean or people using Styrofoam that will continue to fill up our landfills," said Jackie.

When Jackie Blair made Charlotte her home two years ago…

"I was surprised to see so many businesses not recycling even simple things like plastic bottles," said Jackie.

She immediately took action, joining forces with Keep Charlotte Beautiful.

This month, the organization is participating in a national campaign called The Great American Cleanup.

"We've cleaned up District Three, planted trees, done litter pick up," said Jackie.

Keeping the Queen City clean isn't just about its streets, but also sustainability. That's where Jackie's workplace - Hilton Center City comes in.

"We recycle the left over soaps from the guestrooms. It's part of the Global Soap Project.

We send them to Atlanta to be refined and sent to third world countries," said Clark Wade, a cleanup volunteer and Hilton Center City employee.

Around 300 pounds of this white stuff is collected and sent off every month from Hilton Center City.

Recycling soap...

"Our guests comment how beautiful and friendly our city is," said Clark.

Just another way Jackie Blair...

"It just starts with one person," said Jackie.

A gal passionate about her planet - is keeping it clean.
