He's a protector of the community. Today CMPD k-9 Beatty got something that will protect him.
It's all thanks to Leanne Kinsella, her friend Paulette DeRhonda, and Classic Graphics, a marketing and print company, where Kinsella works.
"Matt Yoder called from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and said they already had a company that had donated four bullet-proof vests. He said what we are in need of are harness systems," said Kinsella.

"When she told me her goal was to raise money for two vests, I knew that was a steep goal because theses vests are about $600 dollars a piece," recalls Officer Matt Yoder.

With the help of her clients at Classic, Kinsella and DeRhonda were able to raise more than $1500. The money went to purchase three harness systems for dogs in the CMPD Special Operations K-9 Unit.

"It's got some carrying straps so if the dog is injured for any reason we can backpack him out," said Officer Yoder who is a CMPD K-9 handler.

Various hooks on the harness help the dogs with their tasks. It has a storage compartment. The harness also comes straight from home.  It was made in North Carolina by Jason Watson at Remington.

"I teared up the other day. I am just amazed that this happened. I did not expect, I did not expect this to happen," said Kinsella.

It's not over yet for Kinsella. She hopes to make it happen again for her furry friends.

"I would definitely like to see if there's anyone else who needs something like this or bulletproof vests," said Kinsella.

Kinsella hopes to see more dogs with these vests.

We all have heard of the saying, “a dog is a man’s best friend," it may sound a bit cliche but it’s true for Fred Shrill and his dog Tucker. “I wouldn’t take the world or him,” said Fred as he smiled.

Friday, for my assignment, I was tasked with a ride-along in a Global Rallycross car, at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Cars that go zero-to-60 in 1.9 seconds -- that's faster than a formula one car. We're talking about machines with absurd power. Not a bad gig... But enough to make you a little skittish...
