Piedmont High baseball one win from state championship round

Posted: Updated:
The Piedmont High baseball team won the 2A State Championship last season and is now one-win away from an appearance in the 3A State Championship this season.

The Piedmont Panthers beat Burns High 1-0 on Tuesday and will play the second game in a best-of-three series at home on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The winner of the series will face the winner of the Topsail and South Johnston High series. Topsail currently leads the series 1-0.

For Piedmont, competing in 3A means that they have faced stiffer competition this season, coming from 2A -- plenty of it in Union County.

The Panthers finished second in the 3A Southern Carolina Conference with a 10-5 record (20-8 overall on the season).

Marvin Ridge High led the conference with a 12-3 record (17-9 overall). Weddington tied Piedmont with a 10-5 conference record (18-8 overall).

Weddington won the 3A State Championship in 2012 and 2013 -- but now Piedmont is trying to take that title, while still keeping it in Union County.

Five players from Piedmont that has committed to play college baseball next season.
