Ben McCall loves being outdoors, but he encounters obstacles as soon as he gets outside. He can't walk. As a member of a very active family, the McCall's run into issues when they want to go on hikes- they simply can't take the hikes with his wheelchair.

"We've looked at Crowders Mountain but there's no way we could do it right now. Not the way its set up," says Ben's mom Vanessa.

"When they have the roots in the trees it makes it too bumpy for him, it's not great for the chair, and whoever pushes him really has a tough time."

Now, Crowders Mountain is looking for a $100,000 grant for an ADA approved trail.

This is a state funded grant, and it's the first time they've let state parks apply.

If all goes according to plan, the trail could be ready by the end of next year.

At tonight's Gaston County Board of Commissioners meeting, the entire council threw their support behind the cause. The application is not due until June 6th and does not require the Commission's support, but applications are more likely to be granted if there is community support behind it.
