As Kurt Busch heads to Indianapolis for the Indy 500, Fr. Dale Grubba will be with him.

“He has asked me to say mass for him at 10 o’clock on Sunday morning and then to go down and with him beside the car until the race starts,” said Grubba. “It’s been a real humbling experience for me to think that somebody of his stature would ask me to be part of his life. You get this deep feeling really of just having a value in that person’s life.”

Grubba says that he has a knack for growing close with people who are in the middle of difficulties. That’s the way he got to know Busch a few years ago.

“He had difficulties with other drivers sometimes and with car owners,” said Busch. “My role was to be just a silent witness and to stand there, not necessarily saying anything, but to say I am with you. I am with you through all of this no matter what happens and you can depend on me.”

Grubba left Charlotte this afternoon for tomorrow’s race, and the he will fly back with Busch following the Indy 500 in route to Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“To actually be with him after the race, no matter what happens, and to just be there and be supportive, too me, that’s the important thing,” said Grubba. “I can’t tell you how much it means to be a part of his life or a part of any of the race drivers’ lives that I’ve been a part of.”

Kurt Busch is attempting to be the fifth person to complete both the Indy 500 and the Coca Cola 600 in one day.
