I got so sick of the Canadian cold, I moved down to Charlotte just to avoid the snow. And of course to join the My Fox Carolinas family as a Digital Journalist. I grew up in Calgary (think the Houston of Canada) and after graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, I moved to Toronto to cover sports; which in Canada means hockey.

If you only had 36 hours to spend in the Queen City, what would you do? Where would you eat? What would you want to see? That is the idea behind the New York Times '36 Hours' feature.

Matthew Lyberg is excited that he's getting stronger. "I'm much stronger than I was, I lost 6 inches on my waist and 30 pounds, 15 pounds in 6 months...so that's good!"

He does physical therapy regularly, but equally important is the therapy he does to effect change you can't see.

"We do quiz, we do letter games to build memory, to build brain power..." he says.

Years ago, a car accident left lyberg with a traumatic brain injury. Now, he receives physical, occupational and speech therapy at The Ivey: a senior day care facility in Charlotte.

Therapist Jessica Martin works with many of the members. A weekly cooking class is just one example of the unique kinds of therapy they offer to help members retain their independence.

"We want the members here to preserve some of the skills that they've had. They need to still be able to do their day-to-day functions, their day-to-day activities," says Martin.

How is making cheesecake therapeutic?

"Some of the members help us, they're working on their balance, standing up, walking over, walking back, different things that you would do functionally in your house. We want to make sure that they're able to do that," Martin says.

Therapy is making a difference for men like Lyberg, b
ut he says facilities like The Ivey serve a larger purpose too. He believes keeping people out of hospitals and long-term care facilities is important.

Cost is a factor,
but founder Lynn Ivey says personal pride may be even more important.

"This is so important because we all want to age in place in our own home, and this allows people to age in place, gracefully and with dignity," says Ivey.

For Lyberg it means spending his days here making snacks,
so he can keep making it home for dinner.
