N.C. Approves Tax on E-Cigarettes

Posted: Updated:
Lawmakers in the North Carolina House of Representatives voted to pass a bill that would put a tax on electronic cigarettes. The bill will tax the nicotine liquid at 5 cent per milliliter.

Representative Becky Carney, D-Mecklenburg wanted a tax to e-cigs but would have liked to have seen more than 5 cents.

"If you're going to raise your hand for a tax increase, why not make it count," said Carney. "We need some revenues in the state and this would generate some but not nearly what it could."

The current tax in N.C. on a pack of cigarettes is 45 cents.

The bill now moves to the Senate for another vote.
