Bob Dyar is one of four chaplains employed by Joe Gibbs Racing, which fields teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, as well as the Camping World Truck Series.

“The significance of a chaplain on a race team is really to assist the people in living life,” said Dyar. “We believe that people are the most important asset we have, and so we try to take really good care of everyone who works here.”

The team offers 12 different Bible studies each week. If an employee chooses to attend, they can take advantage of small or large group meetings.

“We try not to be preachy. That’s not what we’re about,” said Dyar. “We try to be helpful and encouraging. Many of the people who come to our Bible studies are not Christians. They come because they want to learn and they want to grow and find out more about a relationship with God.”

The larger Bible study at the team’s Sprint Cup shop is attended by as many as 100 people each week.

“When I first got hired on, I had actually never even been to church,” said Michael Madill, mechanic. “I had never even opened the Bible before, and I was invited and they have kind of helped me get to know Christ.

“It’s a lot of community. You know, getting to know some of the other guys and talk about what’s going on throughout the week. And then of course, during the Bible study, you get to read scripture and learn from the Bible and what God had to say to you.”

John Eicher, gas man for the No. 20 Sprint Cup team, commented, “I feel like the people who have wisdom are people who know the Bible, know what God says. He made us. So, I believe that’s who I go to when I need advice or wisdom.”

Dyar said the team is based on the Gibbs family’s commitment to their own faith.

“They’re all about really caring for people and their own faith is very real in their lives,” said Dyar. “So, therefore, they want to encourage others in really experiencing the full life that’s found in a relationship with Christ.”
