It's the oldest shopping center in the University area but for the past year, it's been missing something.

"I know it's hurt a lot of businesses. They've really struggled and it's been slower for them," said Hair Classics hairdresser, Monica Krusemark.

The Food Lion in the Mallard Crossing Shopping Center closed last May. It's closure sent a ripple effect through other stores.

Little Casears, there for nearly twenty years, shut it's doors.  Other stores struggled to stay open.

Now, Krusemark says news of the fresh market moving in is breathing new life into the shopping center.

"It's very exciting," said Krusemark.

Business owners, like Dairy Queen's Lisa Battaglia, are excited about the new store opening in November.  Dairy Queen saw sales drop after Food Lion left.

"Oh, it will put us back on the map to compete with the newer models," said Battaglia.

City Councilwoman Claire Fallon believes 'The Fresh Market" coming to north Charlotte is just the start.

"I don't think they would have come unless they did time and motion studies to see that the income was here," said City Councilwoman Fallon.

Business owners are ready for their new neighbor to move in.

"I think the fresh market is going to do well here," said Krusemark.

Construction is currently underway at the shopping center for "The Fresh Market."
