Cursive Writing - A Dying Skill?

Posted: Updated:

A South Carolina Senate panel has kept a bill alive that would require students to be taught cursive by the time they reach the fifth grade.

The bill initially received a lot of push back when lawmakers learned that it would cost $27 million in materials and teacher training.

But a South Carolina senator exclusively told My Fox Carolinas that they have added an amendment, bringing the cost down to $600,000.

“That was a huge misunderstanding on the cost,” said state Senator Wes Hayes. “$600,000 is no small thing but when you talk about 81 school districts across the state, I think it’s worth it.”

But educators say it’s not just about finding the money, it’s about finding the time in the classroom to teach the skill.

“Would you rather your kids learn keyboarding or cursive,” said Rock Hill Director of Elementary Education, Richard Melzer.

If the bill becomes law, the money would likely come from the Department of Education’s budget and wouldn’t take effect until 2015.
