Charlotte's basketball team has officially retired the Bobcats name. They've gone back to their roots: The Charlotte Hornets.
The NBA team held a press conference today to talk about the name change.
Fred Whitfield, COO of the Hornets, said at the press conference, "Today we complete a task that has never been done before: bringing a name back after it was used elsewhere."
He said the hornets name return would've never happened without the passion of the fans. The team made the name change because all their research suggested the fans wanted the name change.
The team thanked the New Orleans Pelicans team for releasing the Hornets name to give to Charlotte.
The Hornets name has roots in Charlotte that go back 200 years. During the revolutionary war, local militia men fought resiliently against British troops in the area. General Cornwallis responded to the attack by calling Charlotte fighters, "A veritable hornet's nest of rebellion."
