Tensions were high at Monday's Lake Wylie Marine Commission meeting. Gaston and Mecklenburg counties were set to make a recommendation as to how to deal with kayakers and boaters on the Catawba River, but could not come to a consensus.

Many boaters want to make the river more like the roads, and keep kayakers on the shoulder.

Boater owners say its dangerous when kayakers paddle thru the center of the lake. But kayaking experts say that inexperienced kayakers don't necessarily know when they are floating into the center of the lake.

Kayakers want to establish a "no-wake zone," meaning boaters would have to slow down.

Many people who live along the river were unhappy with this proposal.

A decision is likely to be made at the next Lake Wylie Marine Commission meeting next month.
