Very Special Arts program in Union County celebrates 20 years

Posted: Updated:
For 20 years, Union County Public Schools has been giving students the opportunity to provide a fun-filled day for students with special needs. Today, that opportunity continued at the Union County Agricultural Center.

The student-run program includes arts-and-crafts, snow cone and popcorn making, games like putt-putt and cornhole and even tractor rides for  students with special needs.

Nearly 1,000 students attended. About half were there with disabilities and half were there to be a "buddy."

"We as teachers do as little as possible, on purpose, to make sure that the kids organize and run and learn how to be selfless," Piedmont High teacher Scott Meier said.

At first glance, it appears to be just an opportunity for students with special needs to have a day of smiles. But it's more than that -- it's also an opportunity to influence those helping the special-needs students, and teach life lessons.

"It's really hard to tell who learns more," Piedmont High teacher Tracy Price said. "The children with special needs learning art activities and making more friends or the high school students that are art students that are teaching and learning more about themselves."
