Businesses near the Charlotte Motor Speedway get a surge in revenue during the May races. The Backing Up Classics Car Museum is next door to the speedway. Museum manager Lindsay Hartman said, “A lot of people are in town, staying here, the campgrounds, and they’re looking for something to do, something close by.”

Hartman’s father, Jimmy Morrison, owns Morrison Motor Company, a car dealership. Years ago he bought the car museum. Hartman said, “It’s very different bringing in a lot of the antiques, when you have muscle cars, race cars, the different eras of racing.”

Just down the road from the museum and the speedway is another car-related business, which benefits from race weekends. Ronald Harkey of Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts says they get business from race fans who just walk-in and from those who schedule appointments. He said, “We definitely see an increase in customers. A lot of people actually plan their trips during the race to come by our shop.”

Harkey says founder Dennis Carpenter didn’t really have proximity to the speedway in mind when he set up shop, but he says they benefit from business from race car drivers too. Harkey said, “Ryan Newman just got a ‘60 Galaxy. Several of the race car drivers restore cars, so we see a lot of them come in too as well.”
