Mich. DEQ's director tours dump sites in Detroit

DETROIT (WJBK) - The Director of Environmental Quality visited several of the worst illegal dumping sites in the city Friday.

One of the sites included a cluster of homes that were filled from top to bottom with tires.

"When we heard about this, we instantly started a joint effort between multiple, different departments. This kind of situation's not going to stand in the city. So we actually had the fire Marshall out here that declared these houses fire hazards. Within two weeks from today they'll be down," says Brian Farkas of the Detroit Building Authority.

DEQ Director Dan Wyant also visited a businesses on Detroit's west side that at one time had close to 70,000 tires piled up. The man behind the muck has since been prosecuted. A $89,000 dollar grant is now helping to get rid of the rubbish.

Legislation us now in the works to try and inflate tire laws in hopes of preventing more situations like this and to increase penalties.
