DETROIT (WJBK) -- Police say a female caregiver accused of assaulting a special needs patient inside a Detroit group home has been arrested.

Police sources say officers responded to the Strathmoor Manor on the city's west side after FOX 2 aired cell phone video Thursday (see the video above) taken inside the home by another employee. The disturbing video shows a woman using an extension cord and the metal handle of a mop to strike her victim repeatedly.

FOX 2's Ron Savage reports the 47-year-old woman will be arraigned on felony aggravated assault charges.

The victim, Vera, is said to have sustained a swollen hand and several cuts and bruises on her back from the beating. Vera's mother, Jacqueline Gossett, tells Savage her daughter is 24-years-old and is autistic. She says her brain is developed to the level of a 3-year-old's and that she does not speak.

Bartholomew Ajulufoh, the owner of Strathmoor Manor, is licensed by the state to care for developmentally disabled and mentally ill residents.

However, after the story aired on FOX 2, Detroit Police and state group home licensed investigators closed down his group home. All of the adults living there were taken to safe locations, including Vera.

Ajulufoh's license may also be suspended.

Mark Bernstein of The Sam Bernstein Law Firm, PLLC tells Savage this is not the first run-in the facility has had.

"We are suing today the case worker who was involved in this directly, the facility that was involved in this and, because this is a corporate entity that needs to take this type of conduct seriously, they're going to be held accountable," Bernstein says.

Savage reports Ajulufoh has been cited numerous times by the state at various homes for repeat violations, including poor staffing, using physical force and not protecting residents from other residents.
