Jeffery Race woke up in his Long Island home on September 12001 to a phone call from his sister. She told him to turn on the TV. When he saw the Twin Towers burning, he grabbed a quick shower and was out the door to his fire station. Two flat tires and one city bus later, Race was at Ground Zero. He had just been promoted and was then given the job as a site captain. He spent the next four months sorting through rubble- day and night. Race has been left with chronic sinus issues from the months he spent digging.

He now lives in the Charlotte area and works as a volunteer firefighter. When the 9/11 Memorial Museum opened Thursday, he had mixed emotions. Race was reluctant to watch the ceremony with his comrades and says he hopes to one day get to the museum, but will have to do so on his own time. Nearly thirteen years later, he says certain smells trigger painful memories. Race hopes to keep the memory of that day alive and participates in a stair climb at the Duke Energy building around the anniversary of the attacks.

In 2007, the Appalachian State University Mountaineers made history when it defeated the University of Michigan Wolverines. It was unexpected as Appalachian State was, at the time, an FCS or I-AA team and Michigan was an FBS or I-A team.
