The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department's Cold Case Unit made an arrest on May 15th for a homicide case that happened 29 years ago.

On April 26, 1985, there was an apartment fire at 1721 East 7th Street. When firefighters arrived at the scene to put out the fire, they discovered there was a victim inside one of the burned apartments. The victim, Tony Baucom, died at the scene because of the injuries the fire caused.

The case reopened a few weeks ago when the unit received new information from the fire department. After receiving the tip and conducting an investigation, they made an arrest. Arthur Blake is now charged with murder and first degree arson.

Detective David Phillips says that the passage of time often times helps solve cold cases.

"For one reason or another, allegiances change or people's conscience starts bothering them. We received information in this case, information that a person who had knowledge of what happened that decided to share that information. Based on that, we reopened the case and started following up on some of the leads and conducted additional interviews," Phillips said.

Phillips confirms that the suspect and the victim also knew each other.

"What it appears to be is that the suspect was upset about an unrelated matter and based on some of his actions, it ended up resulting in the victim of this case dying during the commission of the fire," he said.

This is one more arrest for the Cold Case Unit. Since the unit started in 2003, they've reviewed 140 cases, cleared 39, and made 24 arrests.

The victim's family did not want to go on camera, but they are grateful to finally know what happened after all these years.
