Teenager Uses Instagram To Help Save A Life

Posted: Updated:

PHILADELPHIA- "That’s a life that I could have stopped from being gone. If that were me I would want someone to do something," said 15-year-old Nola Latty.

So, Nola did do something when she found herself caught in a life and death drama, which played out in real time.

Only the stranger who needed her help was almost a thousand miles away.

“The other night she made this post, I've taken a lot of pills I want to die now,” Latty said.

It was late Monday, when Nola saw the post, a despondent teen sharing suicidal thoughts on photo sharing app Instagram.

Nola doesn't know the girl, but follows her feed.

Hundreds of other commenters saw the distressing posts as well, however, Nola was the only one that decided to take action.

“While I was calling the police things were going crazy,” Nola said. “I never really said things to her. I didn't like. She was just in my newsfeed, and she meant so much to me already, and I was like no that can't happen, she can't die. No."

She knew next to nothing about the young woman she was trying to help, so other commentators came together to share information about her identity and location.

"It was like I had an army of people behind me," Nola said.

They pinpointed the girl's address to a town in Wisconsin.

Nola connected with police there and an officer went to the teenager’s home.

To Nola's relief, the girl was okay, friends and classmates tell her she's a hero, but Nola shrugs off that title.

She says she wasn't thinking of herself and she was just determined to help the girl in need.

“I would always do something like that for somebody,” Nola said.“It shows social media is not all like teens on their phones disconnected from everything. I wouldn't have known this girl in Wisconsin was depressed unless I had an Instagram. Unless there was social media.”

Police in Wisconsin confirm to us that officers went to the girl's home after Nola's call.

They say she was home with a parent, and are happy to report a welfare check showed the teen was okay.
