Marvin Ridge and Weddington High will be competing in the regional finals for 3A Men's Dual Team Tennis.

The winner moves on to the state championship on Saturday.

The two schools have been rivals since 2007. Marvin Ridge was built to ease overcrowding in Union County Public Schools, and most students at MR came from the Weddington cluster.

Marvin Ridge won both tennis meetings this season and finished first in the Southern Carolina Conference (8-0) with a 14-2 overall record.

Weddington's only conference losses came to Marvin Ridge, finishing 6-2 and 13-3 overall.

"The Marvin coaches and I talk about it every now and then, if the school's hadn't split up we probably would have had our run at five or six state championships," Weddington coach Les Kolman said. "Both of us have done real well individually. They've gone to the state finals, we've gone to the semifinals, and combined -- would have been a powerhouse."

Now that friendly-lines have been drawn, there is some friendly-trash talk amongst the rivals.

"Kind of just like trash talking and then on Twitter we always kind of tell each other we're going to win," Weddington No. 1 player Sahil Vasa said. "...It's always really, really close and every sport is really competitive between the two schools. So anytime we play them it's always going to be close because both teams are going to fight."
